In the early 2000s, the alternative rock/pop band 6cyclemind quickly gained prominence in the Philippines, achieving near-instant success. After nearly a decade of recording and touring, the band underwent lineup changes, leading to the addition of lead guitarist Herbert Hernandez. Already an established musician, Herbert Hernandez had previously founded Moonstar88, where he continues to perform as lead guitarist and songwriter. Balancing two mainstream bands would be enough to keep anyone occupied, but for Hernandez, music is just one part of his multifaceted career. Beyond his role as a musician, he co-founded the internationally acclaimed independent advertising agency GIGIL, alongside Badong Abesamis.
Despite his demanding schedule filled with music performances, Hernandez also navigates a fast-paced career in advertising. His days are packed with meetings, client presentations, and strategic planning for both local and international brands. With an innate talent for both visual arts and music, he thrives on pursuing passions that inspire him.
A typical day for Hernandez begins with prayer and a strong cup of coffee, setting the tone for his workday at GIGIL, where he spends hours on calls, in client meetings, and refining creative campaigns. Amidst his busy schedule, family remains a top priority. Married for 15 years and a father of three, he ensures quality time with his loved ones by taking lunch breaks with them and inviting his children to the office whenever possible. Evenings are reserved for family dinners, followed by gigs with either 6cyclemind or Moonstar88. Before ending his day, he unwinds by playing Mobile Legends with his wife and makes it a point to schedule a weekly date night, family day, and an international family vacation each year. Fitness and health also play a vital role in their lifestyle, with frequent family bike rides.
With a schedule packed with international and local travel, sleep is often sacrificed, with Hernandez sometimes getting as little as four hours of rest per night. Yet, his passion for both music and advertising fuels his drive. The support from fans and clients serves as motivation, reinforcing his commitment to excellence in both industries.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Hernandez is dedicated to creating opportunities for independent talents. In 2018, he launched The Indierectory, a platform designed to connect Filipino freelancers and independent creatives with hiring agencies and companies, with the long-term vision of expanding globally.
Additionally, in 2010, he introduced Lakihan mo Logo (“Make the Logo Bigger”), a concert series offering an outlet for Manila-based advertising professionals. Described as “a commercial break for people making commercials,” this initiative allows ad industry professionals to perform in bands and relieve stress through music. Interestingly, Hernandez himself almost left his music career behind while advancing in advertising, but through Lakihan mo Logo, he ensures that others in his field never have to choose between passion and profession. Since its inception, the concert series has hosted 58 performances, with some participating bands even securing record deals. Furthermore, Hernandez spearheaded 12 “Rockovery” concerts, raising funds for advertising professionals battling serious illnesses.
Now at 40, Hernandez envisions retiring in the next 15 years. Known for being “tireless,” “always switched on,” and “committed to doing great work,” the idea of him stepping away from his many ventures seems almost unimaginable. As a master of time management and prioritization, audiences can expect even more groundbreaking advertising campaigns and unforgettable music from this multi-talented artist. Whether you recognize him as the guitarist of 6cyclemind, the lead guitarist of Moonstar88, or the co-founder of GIGIL, one thing remains certain—Herbert Hernandez is devoted to excelling in every role he takes on.
